The tempting shortcut

The shortcut is endless sender blocking: it is available, familiar and requires no decision. In the moment, an old competition address receives a changing cast of promotions. Convenience wins because the future cost is invisible.

Where the cost appears

New senders can keep using an address after each individual block. The clean-up then touches several systems instead of one. What looked like fewer addresses becomes more password resets, preference changes and uncertain records.

Fewer decisions today can create more dependencies tomorrow.

Repair the pattern

  • Identify the route
  • Move legitimate senders
  • Disable before deleting
  • Never reassign old addresses

Do not rush to disable the old route. Move important relationships, confirm the replacements and allow a cooling-off period for anything forgotten.

Avoid the opposite mistake

Do not cut off receipts, warranties or people who still need the address. The answer is not maximum complexity. Use the smallest boundary that contains the likely problem.

Give the next relationship its own route.
