The short answer

An email alias is another working email address that stands between a website and the address you use every day. Messages sent to the alias still reach you, but the sender never needs your everyday address.

Think of it like a virtual card number for your inbox. The shop receives an address that works for the transaction. You keep the underlying address you care about out of the exchange.

One inbox. More than one front door.

How an alias works

You create a fresh address before signing up, buying something or beginning a conversation. You give that address to the other party and receive its messages as normal.

What happens next depends on the service. Some aliases forward messages to another provider. Others, including MXDuck, keep the messages inside their own inbox. Either way, the website sees the alias rather than the address you normally use.

A useful alias should also be controllable. You should know what it was created for, be able to keep it when the relationship continues, and be able to retire it when it is no longer welcome.

Why use a separate address?

It limits unnecessary sharing

Your email address is more than a delivery route. It is a persistent identifier that can connect accounts, purchases and mailing lists. A different address for each relationship makes those connections less automatic.

It tells you where unwanted mail began

If an address created for one shop suddenly receives unrelated promotions, you have useful evidence about where the trail started. You do not have to guess which of dozens of companies shared or exposed the address.

It gives you a clean exit

Unsubscribing asks a sender to stop. Retiring an alias removes the route altogether. That distinction matters when unsubscribe links are ignored, broken or untrustworthy.

Alias, temporary address or permanent address?

These terms often overlap. The useful difference is not the label but the job:

  • Quick: a verification code, download or unfamiliar signup.
  • Temporary: a purchase, quote or short conversation.
  • Permanent: an important account that deserves its own stable address.

An address can begin as temporary and become worth keeping. Control matters more than predicting the future perfectly.

An alias is not an invisibility cloak

An alias can keep your everyday email out of sight. It does not automatically make you anonymous, secure every account or prevent a website from collecting information through other means.

Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, careful browsing and sensible account recovery still matter. Email separation is one useful layer, not a complete security system.

How MXDuck approaches aliases

MXDuck lets you create a fresh @mxduck.com address, give it a label and choose how long it should live. You can extend it when the conversation continues, make it permanent or retire it when the job is done.

Incoming messages stay inside MXDuck instead of being forwarded into your everyday inbox. The inbox displays plain text and does not load remote tracking pixels. Your everyday address stays out of the exchange.
